ModelCHECK, a quality control add-on to Pro/ENGINEER[$reg], helps you build parts, drawings, and assemblies according to company standards and best practices. This consistency, in turn, ensures that your models can be reused downstream in design, analysis or manufacturing applications. This web-based tool not only highlights problems in your model, but also guides you through the repair. In the process, ModelCHECK helps build your skills and proficiency with Pro/ENGINEER.
What kinds of things does ModelCHECK investigate?
PTC has steadily added new functionality to ModelCHECK[$reg] over the past several years. Today, this product checks the quality of Pro/ENGINEER models in three basic areas:
1.  Conformity to company standards and use of proper modeling techniques
2.  Manufacturability and quality of the geometry
3.  Detection of similar designs.
Because of the gap between these two surfaces, this part cannot be made into a solid. A wavy surface cannot be milled. How does it work? When you run ModelCHECK, it displays any problems in your parts, assemblies, or drawings in your web browser. From this report, you can either highlight or fix the problem following the online modeling advice (Fig. 1). For added efficiency, you can run this tool in batch mode, enabling you to report and fix a large number of models simultaneously.

hat are some of the specific productivity gains from using ModelCHECK?
Everyone agrees that it’s easier to work with models that are built properly and conform to a certain standard. To this end, companies are currently using ModelCHECK to:
·  Ensure that models built by suppliers or contractors are acceptable
·  Verify that models are error-free and ready for release to Pro/INTRALINK[$reg]
·  Automatically fix large quantities of models
·  Reduce the number of design changes required in order to manufacture a model

revent users from recreating models that already exist.
Last year, you added something called “Shape Indexing.” What does this do exactly?
When ModelCHECK runs on a part, it analyzes a series of shape attributes in the current model and compares them to those in all other previously created models. ModelCHECK stores the attributes for the different models in a separate file, making search times extremely fast (100,000 models in 3 seconds). Since our customers tell us that duplicate models are such a serious problem, we are aggressively working to add new functionality to the Shape Indexing component, such as:
·  Storing the shape attributes in Pro/INTRALINK
·  Integrating Fast Preview technology into ModelCHECK to allow users to visualize similar models before retrieving them into Pro/ENGINEER
·  Integrating Shape Indexing into Windchill and PartsLink to enable enterprise-wide searches.
What’s new in ModelCHECK 2001?
We’ve added 46 new checks this year—more than in any past release of the product. Perhaps the most important addition is GeomIntegrityCHECK. This new feature allows you to check for problems that will make it difficult to manufacture or to translate the model between CAD systems. GeomIntegrityCHECK is written to comply with the German VDA 4955 V2 standard. Some of the other new additions are checks for small elements, identical elements, surface and curve continuity, and edge alignment.
What other enhancements is PTC planning in the near future?
PTC is working diligently on making ModelCHECK easier to set up and use. We will be introducing new user interfaces and configuration wizards over the next few releases. A prime example is the configuration program written for GeomIntegrity-CHECK
